Starting on May 24, 2012, The Austintown Fitch class of 1962
started a project, a project that would be a memorial for 2 brave men who fought
in the Military to protect us during the vietnam conflict. You may hear
about heroes like sport stars winning a game, or comic book heroes like superman
or batman, but these two men are what real heroes are all about.
During the Awesome-Day fest in the Austintown School District, there was a
ceremony for the memorial of 1962, on Fitch field. The ceremony included
singers, speakers, a representative for Tim Ryan and veterans of the military.
The two brave american men were Charles Brown and Jim
Prommersberger. Charles Brown was a 2nd Lieutenant, his platoon was on a
search and destroy mission, when all of a sudden, 5,000 vietnamese
semi-automatic guns went off and were breaching the perimeter of the US base.
Charles Brown quickly ran to a semi-auto turret and started to fire at the
enemy, after killing quite a few, Charles Brown got shot in the head and died.
Jim Prommersberger was 11 days before leaving the Army, but one day people
in his platoon were lost on the battlefield. Jim volunteered to go and
find the 11 people that were missing, so he went out and got 10 of them and
brought them back to base, he went out to get the 11th person, when a motar was
launched. He jumped on the soldier and protected him, and sacrificing
himself. These are two great American heroes.
