Giant panda twins Mei Lun and Mei Huan are leaving the Atlanta Zoo in November 2016 to go to China for the first few weeks of 2017.
Mei Lun and Mei Huan are leaving at the age of three, born on July 15, 2013. They were the first surviving panda twins born in the United States. The head Veterinarian in the Atlanta zoo said that they both have opposite personalities. Mei Lun was always grouchy, while Mei Huan always was just laid back.
These cute cuddly creatures might be leaving, but don’t worry: there are plenty of other pandas that live in North America. They consist of four pandas in Atlanta, three in Washington, three in San Diego and finally two of these furry friends in Memphis.
Mei Lun and Mei Huan will be safe on the travel too! The Atlanta Zoo has packed bamboo, apples, pears, bananas, sugar cane and plenty of water. "We've loved having two grow up together. It's been really fun to watch them play and entertain each other," says Hayley Murphy Vice President of Animal Divisions. She says that their departure is bitter-sweet because of this.
These pandas might be leaving, but they have six month old twin siblings that will be announced in January of this year. We will miss these Pandas, but they will go back to where their mother was born in China.
