How would you like to program robots made out of Legos? Well, a group of
students at Austintown Middle School love to do this. At AMS, there are teams
that design, create, and build robots that are made of Legos. This after school
club is called the First Lego League (FLL). The FLL teams compete with other
schools to see which group finishes the most missions with their robot before
the time runs out. Core values are at the center of the missions. A core value
could include helping one another. This is the primary goal of teamwork for the
core values. Each team has coaches and mentors to guide the students in finding
answers to questions. Teams are required to be kind to each other in friendly
competition. What the team discovers as a whole is more important than winning.
Having fun is another core value.
Sixth, seventh and eighth grade students make up four teams. Each team can have five to ten student on a team. The teams at Austintown Middle School are called the Fabulous Fire Fighting Falcons, Mad Scientists, Bio Hazard and Falco Tech Jr.
Most of the teams have students that are in STEM. The teams build the robot, program the robot and tell the robot what to do. Each group must work together to make the project successful. Students can make or create a skit. All students must have a presentation that talks about the robot and core values.
The FLL teams are working on a mission called Nature’s Fury. Nature’s Fury is a project that involves finding answers to natural disasters like tornadoes, wildfires, hurricanes and earthquakes. The project will identify a city that could experience a natural disaster. FLL teams come up with a problem that happens when a natural disaster occurs. Students will create a solution to the
problem that helps people stay safe, rebuild or helps prepare people for the natural disaster. The four team share the problem and solution with judges. The teams meet Monday thru Thursday in the AMS library. Their first competition is
at Girard High School on November 23, 2013. The second competition is at Warren Harding High School on December 7, 2013. The public is welcome to attend and view the competition.
